Spiritual Abuse. Is it Valid?

Reeling from the emotional aftermath of being kicked out of Milestone, I began to do some research on spiritually abusive churches.

I am aware that many people are not familiar with the terminology or do not understand or believe that it exists. They are sorely mistaken.

Toxic Faith is a great read for those interested in how spiritually abusive churches work.

There are some great videos here: www.nacronline.com/ru_video/spabuse/1/index.shtml
These are done by a very well-respected Christian author and speaker who teaches on this subject. He has written The Subtle Power of Spiritual Abuse as well as Soul Repair. Good resources, both.

I recently heard a Christian psychologist talk about the fact that people who come from broken and dysfuntional homes are particularly susceptible to controlling environments (like gangs or certain churches) because they provide a strong sense of family. The person will tolerate the intolerable to ensure a place in the family. I have found this to be true. It certainly was for us.
